what damages Affinity?

Sure, destroying too many ships from one faction drops your affinity ( and can lead to war ), but what else hurts it?

Making lots of trades ( Delivery Quests ) with the settlements helps affinity, but what else helps it?

Just asking, because I just did a coupe hours worth of trading, enough to make well over a million in gold, only battled in Endless just enough to get my Daily Challenge quota, didn't drop any trades, also did the "grocery run" where I go around and sell each settlement small amounts of stuff at their market, and even bought a few bits from those markets when necessary. And yet my affinity went down. Ok, it only went down a bit with a few factions. But still. Do the settlements get lonely or jealous if they don't get enough trades and others (perhaps the ones they're always at odds with) get more attention? That's the only thing I can think of, and that seems a bit silly.

Ok, I just re-read the FAQ on the settlements. It says that if you associate ( ie make delivery quests? ) too much at settlements of a faction that is at war with another faction, your affinity at the second faction will drop. But, are the faction ALWAYS at war with each other? ( I never see them fighting anywhere ever ) If so, wouldn't that preclude "enemy" ships from trading with the other faction's settlements? Because ships of all factions visit all settlements all the time. Massive bribery and corruption going on with the NPC ships? :D

Yeah, I know, I'm looking far too deeply at this, as it's just a game. But I have lost some affinity with the French, mainly because there were almost no quests available that delivered to Havana for a couple days.

We see that with your second comment you indeed got most of the information already on our 'official' explanation. (Link here for other players reading this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35 )

It was indeed the affinity that the factions have between themselves that influenced your overall affinity while you were doing your trades. This affinity between them is based on their stories in the game and general history, rather than them actually fighting on the map with each other (although we have noted it as feedback for the development team, as it could be something interesting to add one day!).

We are quite content with our current affinity system, although we are always looking into making some positive changes and we listen to the feedback of our users. :) So if you have any other ideas (whether it be making it more complicated or simple), you can always let us know!

I'm more about trying to understand it than to critique it. And I think I've got it figured out at this point. No matter how hard you try to get Affinity up to the maximum, the never ending squabbles between the factions will make it wobble a bit if one faction has more trades out there to be fulfilled. Yeah, I'm looking at you Santa Clara and Turks. You guys get grumpy if nobody sells you stuff but you rarely have enough quests available at the other settlements, even those from your own faction.

It does not appear to me that the value of a trade has any effect on affinity, merely that a trade has taken place at a settlement. On the other hand, trades - or Delivery Quests as you call them officially - that come from Headquarters do not seem to enhance affinity. Nor does buying and selling small amounts of trade goods at the settlement markets. That seems a bit odd, since the size of a settlement-settlement delivery quest has no impact, but my guess is that exchanges at the settlement market aren't deliveries of requested cargo/merchandise. OTOH, a sale is a sale, right, so maybe they ought to be. That's my only suggestion for Affinity.

After tens of thousands of trades, I've still never made the effort to count how many trades it takes to go from total War to Hostile to Neutral to Buccaneer to Privateer to the maximum "green handshake" level. A lot.

Undertaking a settlement's Governor Quest and completing at least the first part of it is good for a boost too it seems, although you usually have to be in pretty good standing to be allowed to take on one of those quests. The downside of that is that doing a Governor Quest nearly to the end always results in a war with some other faction. Especially the Escort missions and Defend the Fortress, both of which kill at least 15 ships from the other faction.
